About Us
What We Do: High Tech Revolt delivers tips, life hacks, and product solutions for combating the addictive nature of smartphones and social media.
Dilemma: Smartphones and social media are cleverly designed to keep our eyes glued to the screen, keeping and our time and attention from the magnificent places and people around us. The smartphone has bundled together so many essential services (phone, email, watch, maps, flashlight!) that it is increasingly impossible to exist without a smartphone.
Our Origin Story: My name is Kevin. I experimented life without a smartphone for 3 years and 10 months (2017-2021) while handling high-stakes litigation as an attorney.
I encountered some minor obstacles with not constantly having the internet in my pocket, but my boss’s dinner-time emails could wait.
The advantages of ditching my smartphone were enlightening. Without a smartphone pulling at my attention, I could give my family and friends my full presence. I read piles of books. I even wrote a book (very poor first attempt). My meditation practice was solid.
My unlocked creative energies also hatched a plan for my wife and I to reduce our overhead and start our own business ventures. We quit our jobs, sold our house and cars, and moved across the globe with our 5 and 1/2 kids (and our pet Cockatiel, Cheekers).
Then I hit a roadblock. Being in a new country with a new language and needing to stay connected to overseas clients, I made the executive decision to switch back to a smartphone. I reluctantly pulled the SIM card out of my Nokia 3310 and slid it into a hand-me-down IPhone 7.
Indeed the smartphone helped with translations, maps, and traveling. But with the smartphone once again constantly in my pocket, the dark side creeped in.
Bit by bit, my time and attention was pulled into the smartphone blackhole. I could feel my hand compulsively reaching in my pocket for no reason. My meditation time was diminishing. My sleep was erratic. My concentration was lifeless and slaughtered.
It was time to recapture my time.
Goal/Values: High Tech Revolt is designed to help all of us reduce reliance on smartphones and social media through tips, life hacks, and resources in battling smartphone addiction.
